Frequently asked questions

A little more understanding.

It is natural to have questions. These answers are a starting point for a conversation with your doctor.

Is a vasectomy permanent?

Yes. Vasectomy is intended to be permanent. Reversal involves further surgery and does not guarantee a pregnancy. If you are unsure about having children in the future, discuss other contraception options and sperm storage at your consultation.

What does “no-scalpel” mean?

It describes how the doctor reaches the tubes that carry sperm: through a small opening in the skin rather than a scalpel incision. The tubes are then blocked. It is still a surgical procedure, with benefits and risks to discuss beforehand.

When can I stop using other contraception?

Only after your follow-up semen test has been reviewed and your doctor has given you clearance. Vasectomy does not work immediately. Follow the clinic’s testing instructions and keep using contraception until you are told it is safe to stop.

How much time will I need off work?

This depends on your recovery and what your job involves. Physical work and heavy lifting generally need a longer break than desk work. Discuss your work, exercise and travel plans at your consultation so you can plan appropriate time off.

Will it affect testosterone or sexual function?

Vasectomy does not lower testosterone. Erections and orgasm should be unchanged. You will still ejaculate, but after successful treatment and clearance the semen will no longer carry sperm. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

What are the risks?

Possible complications include bleeding, bruising, swelling, infection and persistent scrotal pain. The procedure can fail, including rarely after initial clearance, if the tubes reconnect. Your doctor will explain these risks and how they relate to you before you decide.

Where are consultations and procedures held?

Both take place at Belgian Gardens Medical Centre, 23 Bundock Street, Belgian Gardens, Townsville. Contact The Vasectomy Clinic, Townsville on 0493 364 798 to arrange a consultation and confirm appointment details.

How much does a vasectomy cost?

Contact the clinic for current consultation and procedure fees. Ask what the quote includes, whether follow-up testing has a separate cost, and whether you are eligible for a Medicare rebate. We will help you clarify the costs before booking.
